چکیده

Stem Cells for Recovery of Human Central Nervous System Function. " In response to the Route 28 challenge, we propose a novel combinatorial treatment approach using multiple biological interventions in conjunction with controlled electrical stimulation to enhance the benefits of a cellular replacement strategy. Using an aligned polymer scaffold seeded with embryonic neural stem cells, we aim to create a relay for the disconnected axons in a transection rodent model of spinal cord injury. This approach will be implemented with (1) a growth factor gradient, (2) chondroitinase ABC (chABC) injections, and (3) functional electrical stimulation and in situ-recording. We hope to create an environment that is supportive for stem cell survival and differentiation to facilitate neural relays, long distance host axonal regeneration, and functional recovery.

Objectives: One of the most common and disabling complications that affects individuals with spinal cord injury is spasticity. The purpose of this study is to compare the effect of agonist and antagonist electrical stimulations on triceps surae muscle spasticity in patients with spinal cord injury. Methods: A total of 30 subjects with spinal cord injury were considered for the study. They were...

O27: The Role of Hydrogels and Cell Based Therapies in Regeneration of Spinal Cord Injury

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the devastating conditions leading to functional and neurological deficits following road traffic accidents. To date, there is no definite treatment for repairing damaged spinal cord tissue. In this regard, cell therapy opens a new window in front of scientists by using different cells such as mesenchymal stem cells, olfactory ensheathing cells, Schwann cells,...

Compound Action Potential of Isolated Spinal Cord: A Biophysical Analysis to Address Activity of Individual Fibers Following Contusion Injury

Compound action potential (CAP) of spinal cord represents valuable properties of neural fibers including excitability, rate of myelination and membrane integrity. These properties are measured using amplitude, latency and area under curve of CAPs recorded from spinal cord. Here, the isolated spinal cord was set in a double sucrose gap (DSG) chamber and its response to intracellular stimulation ...

Therapeutic Stimulation for Restoration of Function After Spinal Cord Injury.

Paralysis due to spinal cord injury can severely limit motor function and independence. This review summarizes different approaches to electrical stimulation of the spinal cord designed to restore motor function, with a brief discussion of their origins and the current understanding of their mechanisms of action. Spinal stimulation leads to impressive improvements in motor function along with s...

Plasticity of the spinal neural circuitry after injury.

Motor function is severely disrupted following spinal cord injury (SCI). The spinal circuitry, however, exhibits a great degree of automaticity and plasticity after an injury. Automaticity implies that the spinal circuits have some capacity to perform complex motor tasks following the disruption of supraspinal input, and evidence for plasticity suggests that biochemical changes at the cellular ...
